How to Grow Chives Seeds (Allium schoenoprasum):
Chives are hardy perennial herbs with thin, onion-flavored leaves and purple pom-pom flowers. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outdoors in early spring (or fall in warm climates). Sow seeds about 0.5 cm (¼ in) deep in loose, well-drained soil or seed mix, lightly cover, and keep evenly moist. Germination usually takes 7–14 days. Give full sun for fastest, thickest growth, though light shade works in hot areas. When seedlings are a few inches tall, thin or transplant to 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart; they’ll form clumps over time.
How to Care for Chives:
Water regularly while plants establish, then water when the topsoil begins to dry—chives like steady moisture but don’t want soggy roots. Feed lightly with compost or a mild balanced fertilizer in spring; if you harvest a lot, a second light feed mid-season helps regrowth. Harvest by snipping leaves 2–3 cm above the base, taking no more than one-third of the clump at once so it rebounds quickly. Remove flower stalks if you want more leaf production, or let them bloom for pollinators and seed saving. Every 2–3 years, divide crowded clumps in spring or fall to keep plants vigorous. Chives handle frost well, may die back in winter, and return strongly each spring.
