How to Grow Cumin Seeds (Cuminum cyminum):
Cumin is a warm-season annual spice plant that needs a long, dry, sunny stretch to mature seeds. Direct sow outdoors after all frost danger has passed and nights stay warm; cumin hates transplanting because of its taproot. Choose full sun and very well-drained, light soil (sandy/loamy is ideal). Sow seeds about 0.5–1 cm (¼–½ in) deep, spacing 10–15 cm (4–6 in) apart in rows 30–45 cm (12–18 in) apart. Keep the soil lightly moist until germination, usually 7–14 days in warm conditions. Thin seedlings so plants aren’t crowded—good airflow is important.

How to Care for Cumin:
Water gently during early growth, then reduce watering once plants are established; cumin prefers the dry side and too much moisture causes weak growth or disease. Avoid heavy fertilizer—rich nitrogen makes lush leaves but fewer seeds; a small compost mix-in at planting is enough. Keep weeds down early because cumin seedlings are small and slow at first. Plants flower in small white/pink clusters, then form seed heads; stop heavy watering as seeds begin to dry so they ripen well. Harvest when most seed heads turn brown and dry (but before they shatter)—cut stems, bundle, and hang to finish drying, then rub out seeds. Store seeds fully dry in an airtight container for best aroma.
