How to Grow Organic Peppermint Seeds (Mentha × piperita):
Peppermint can be grown from seed, but know that seed-grown plants may vary a bit from true “peppermint” because it’s a natural hybrid—still totally fine for home growing. Start seeds indoors 8–10 weeks before last frost (or at the start of your cool season in hot climates). Use a light seed-starting mix and scatter seeds on the surface; they need light, so cover with only a whisper of soil (1–2 mm). Mist to keep evenly moist and keep temps around 18–24°C (65–75°F). Germination is usually 7–21 days. Once seedlings have a few true leaves, transplant into individual pots. Move outdoors after weather is mild, spacing 25–30 cm (10–12 in) apart. Peppermint loves rich, moist soil and does best in part sun to full sun; in hot areas, morning sun with afternoon shade keeps leaves lush. If you’re planting in the ground, consider a pot-in-ground or barrier—peppermint spreads fast.
How to Care for Organic Peppermint:
Keep soil consistently moist for tender, strongly flavored leaves; don’t let it dry out hard, especially in containers. Mulch helps hold moisture and keeps roots cool. Feed lightly with compost or a gentle balanced fertilizer every 4–6 weeks; too much fertilizer makes flavor weaker. Pinch tips often to make plants bushy and prevent early flowering. Harvest anytime once plants are established—cut stems just above a leaf node, and never take more than about one-third of the plant at once. For best flavor, harvest before or right as it starts flowering. Peppermint is pretty tough, but watch for aphids, spider mites, or rust in humid shade; good airflow, sun, and watering at soil level prevent most issues. In winter it may die back, then regrow from roots in spring; trim old stems down to encourage fresh new shoots.
