How to Grow Organic Red Salad Bowl Lettuce – Lollo Rosso Seeds:
Lollo Rosso is a cool-season, loose-leaf lettuce with frilly red tips that grows fast and sweet in mild weather. Direct sow outdoors in early spring or fall; in hot climates, sow during the coolest months for best color and texture. Choose a spot with full sun to partial shade (morning sun is ideal in warm areas) and loose, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Sow seeds very shallow—on the surface or covered with only 2–3 mm (⅛ in) of soil—then gently press in. Keep soil evenly moist until germination, usually 5–10 days. Thin seedlings to 15–20 cm (6–8 in) apart for full heads, or leave closer and harvest as baby leaf.
How to Care for Lollo Rosso Lettuce:
Water consistently to keep soil lightly moist; dryness makes leaves bitter and can trigger bolting. Mulch helps cool the soil and prevent moisture swings. Feed lightly—too much nitrogen makes soft leaves—so a small compost top-dress or half-strength balanced liquid feed every 2–3 weeks is plenty, especially in containers. Harvest cut-and-come-again by snipping outer leaves when they’re 10–15 cm tall, or harvest the whole rosette at once when it’s full and ruffled (often 40–55 days). In warm spells, give afternoon shade and extra water to keep leaves crisp and delay bolting. Watch for slugs/snails and aphids on tender growth; remove early and keep airflow good.
