Broadleaf sage is a slow-starting but long-lived perennial herb. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before your last frost (or at the beginning of your cool season in warm climates). Sow seeds shallow—about 3–5 mm (⅛–¼ in) deep—in a light, well-draining seed mix, then gently firm the surface. Keep the soil just slightly moist (not wet) and provide warmth around 18–24°C (65–75°F). Germination can be irregular and slow, often 10–21 days. Once seedlings have a few true leaves, pot them up to stronger light and airflow. Transplant outdoors after frost when nights are mild, spacing plants 30–45 cm (12–18 in) apart. Choose full sun and very well-drained soil; sage hates soggy roots and does best in sandy or loamy beds.
