About this plant:
The Paper Spine Cactus, scientifically known as Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus, is a unique variety of cactus native to Argentina. It's a part of the Opuntia genus and is beloved for its interesting appearance and easy care requirements.
The name "Paper Spine Cactus" comes from the plant's thin, flexible spines that resemble rolled-up paper. These spines are typically white to light brown in color and are more decorative than defensive, as they are not particularly sharp.
The plant grows in segmented sections that are easily detached. These cylindrical segments, or "joints", are blue-green and can grow to around 1-2 inches in diameter. The joints have areoles (the bumps on cactus where spines grow) that produce the distinctive paper-like spines.
The Paper Spine Cactus is a slow grower, reaching a height of about 1 foot (30 cm) in cultivation. It produces attractive white or pale pink flowers, usually in the summer.
Like most cacti, the Paper Spine Cactus prefers a sunny location and well-draining soil. It's drought-tolerant and doesn't need much water, making it a low-maintenance choice for a houseplant. As with many cacti, it's sensitive to overwatering, and the roots can rot if they're left in wet soil for too long.
In terms of propagation, it's as easy as sticking a detached joint in soil and waiting for it to root, making this plant a joy to cultivate.
