Burning Bush/Summer Cypress (Kochia) is a fast-growing annual ornamental shrub. In summer it forms a soft, feathery green mound, then in late summer to fall it turns a vivid red. You can start seeds in trays and transplant later, or sow them directly in the garden. If starting in trays, sow about 4–6 weeks before the weather is reliably warm; for direct sowing, wait until the soil has warmed up and cold weather has passed. Kochia seeds are very small and need light to germinate, so scatter them on top of loosened soil, press them gently to ensure contact, or cover with only a very thin layer of soil. Mist lightly and keep the surface evenly moist. With warm temperatures around 18–24°C, seeds usually sprout in about 7–15 days. When seedlings have several true leaves and are about 8–10 cm tall, thin out weaker ones and move the rest to their final spot. Harden them off for a few days first by gradually exposing them to sun and wind. Plant in full sun (at least 6 hours a day) for a compact shape and strong red color, and make sure the soil drains well, because the plant dislikes waterlogged conditions. Water regularly for the first 2–3 weeks after transplanting to help roots establish, then water only when the topsoil dries, since mature plants are fairly drought tolerant. Kochia doesn’t need heavy feeding—light fertilizer is enough if you want extra lush growth, but overfeeding can make plants floppy. You can pinch or trim the tips during summer to encourage a rounder, bushier form. Finally, keep in mind that kochia self-seeds easily, so if you don’t want lots of volunteers next year, remove seed heads before they dry and drop.
