How to Grow German Chamomile:
German chamomile grows best in full sun (6–8 hours/day) but can handle partial shade in hot climates. It prefers light, well-draining soil and a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0–7.0). You can plant it in spring after the last frost or start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks earlier. When sowing, simply sprinkle the seeds on the soil surface without covering them, press lightly, and mist with water. Seeds germinate in 7–14 days at 18–22°C (65–72°F).
Keep the soil lightly moist during germination, then water moderately once plants establish, as chamomile tolerates some drought and dislikes waterlogged soil. Thin seedlings to 15–25 cm (6–10 inches) apart. Plants grow 60–90 cm tall and may need support in windy areas. Fertilizer is usually unnecessary since too much can reduce fragrance; keeping the area weed-free is enough.
Harvest the flowers when the petals begin to curve backward, ideally on a dry morning, by cutting or pinching them off. To dry, spread the blooms in a single layer in a dry, shaded place for 1–2 weeks until crisp, then store them in airtight jars away from sunlight.
German chamomile flowers are commonly used for herbal tea, calming aromatherapy, skincare and haircare products, and as a natural sleep aid.
