How to Grow Ice Plant Seeds (Delosperma / Mesembryanthemum):
Ice Plant is a sun-loving, drought-tolerant plant grown for its bright, daisy-like flowers and succulent foliage. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before the last frost, or direct sow outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and soil has warmed. Use very well-drained soil (sandy or cactus mix works best). Sow seeds on the soil surface or cover extremely lightly—they need light to germinate. Gently press seeds in and mist to keep the surface slightly moist. Germination usually takes 7–21 days in warm conditions. Transplant seedlings outdoors once weather is settled, spacing plants about 20–30 cm (8–12 in) apart. Choose a spot with full sun for best growth and flowering.
How to Care for Ice Plants:
Ice Plants thrive on neglect once established. Water regularly only during the early growth stage; after that, water sparingly and let soil dry between waterings—overwatering is the main cause of failure. Fertilizer is rarely needed; too-rich soil reduces flowering and causes weak growth. Full sun (6–8+ hours) is essential for compact plants and abundant blooms. In very humid or rainy areas, excellent drainage is critical to prevent rot. Deadheading is not required, but trimming spent flowers keeps plants tidy. Many Ice Plants are perennial in warm, dry climates and act as annuals in colder zones. They tolerate heat, poor soil, and drought extremely well, making them ideal for rock gardens, borders, and containers.
