How to Grow and Care for Larkspur Seeds – Giant Imperial Mix
Larkspur Giant Imperial Mix is a tall, elegant annual that produces long spikes of flowers in shades of lavender, rose, pink, white, and deep blue. These plants prefer cool weather, so the best time to sow them is during late autumn or very early spring, depending on your climate. In regions with mild winters, the seeds are often sown in late fall so they can sprout and establish quietly in the cool season. In colder climates, seeds can be sown as soon as the soil can be worked in early spring. Larkspur seeds actually germinate better when exposed to cold, so many gardeners chill the seeds in the refrigerator for about one to two weeks before sowing to improve sprouting.
When preparing your growing area, choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil. These plants do not perform well in hot, humid conditions, and they struggle in heavy, waterlogged soil. To sow the seeds, scatter them on the soil surface and press them lightly into the earth, covering them with only a very thin layer of soil because they need light contact but should not be buried deeply. Keep the soil evenly moist while waiting for germination, which usually takes two to three weeks in cool temperatures.
As the seedlings grow, water them regularly but avoid soaking the soil, because too much moisture can cause rot. Larkspur develops strong vertical growth and can reach one to one and a half meters in height, so it often benefits from staking or support, especially in windy areas. The plants grow most vigorously in cool weather and will produce tall, impressive flower spikes in late spring or early summer. Once the heat of midsummer arrives, blooming may slow or stop entirely, which is normal for this species.
Feeding is generally simple, as larkspur is not a heavy feeder. You can mix a little compost into the soil before planting, and that is usually enough. If you are growing them in containers or poor soil, an occasional light feeding with a balanced fertilizer helps maintain strong blooming. Removing spent flower spikes encourages the plants to produce more blooms, and if you leave some flowers to fade naturally, they will set seeds that can self-sow for the next season.
Giant Imperial Mix works beautifully in cottage gardens, borders, and cut flower gardens, producing long stems ideal for floral arrangements. They attract pollinators and add vertical structure to the garden, creating a dramatic and colorful display.
