How to Grow Ohio Spiderwort Seeds (Tradescantia ohiensis):
Ohio Spiderwort is a hardy native perennial that’s easy to grow from seed. You can direct sow outdoors in late fall or early spring; fall sowing works especially well because seeds benefit from natural cold stratification. For spring sowing, chill seeds in the refrigerator for 2–4 weeks before planting to improve germination. Sow seeds on the soil surface or cover very lightly (2–3 mm / ⅛ in) since they need some light. Keep soil evenly moist until germination, which usually takes 10–21 days in mild temperatures. Choose a site with full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil. Space seedlings about 30–45 cm (12–18 in) apart; plants spread into clumps over time.
How to Care for Ohio Spiderwort:
Water regularly during establishment; once established, Ohio Spiderwort is drought tolerant and adapts well to poor soils. Full sun gives the best flowering, but light shade is fine, especially in hot climates. Plants bloom heavily in late spring to early summer with blue-purple flowers that open in the morning and close by afternoon. After the main bloom, cut plants back by about one-third to refresh foliage and often encourage a second flush of flowers. Fertilizer is minimal—too much nitrogen causes floppy growth; compost once a year is enough. Spiderwort tolerates heat, humidity, and cold winters, and has few pest problems. It self-seeds lightly, so remove spent flowers if you want to limit spreading, or leave them for natural reseeding and pollinators.
