How to Grow Poached Egg Plant Seeds (Limnanthes douglasii):
Poached Egg Plant is a fast-growing, cool-season annual wildflower. Direct sow outdoors—this plant doesn’t like transplanting. Sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in fall in mild-winter areas for earlier spring blooms. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and lightly press in or cover very lightly (about 2–3 mm / ⅛ in). Choose full sun to light shade and well-drained soil; average to poor soil is fine. Space plants about 15–25 cm (6–10 in) apart. Keep soil lightly moist until germination, which usually takes 7–14 days.
How to Care for Poached Egg Plants:
Water moderately during establishment; once growing, plants are fairly drought tolerant and prefer soil to dry slightly between waterings. Too much water or rich fertilizer leads to floppy growth and fewer flowers—fertilizer is usually unnecessary. Plants bloom in cool spring weather with creamy white flowers and yellow centers that attract pollinators. Deadheading isn’t required, but trimming spent blooms can tidy plants and extend flowering a bit. As temperatures rise, plants naturally finish; let some flowers set seed for easy self-sowing next season.
