How to Grow Tidy Tips Seeds (Layia platyglossa):
Tidy Tips is a fast-growing annual wildflower that loves cool starts and mild weather. Direct sow outdoors—this plant doesn’t like transplanting. Sow in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, or in fall in mild-winter climates for earlier blooms. Scatter seeds on the soil surface and lightly press in or cover very lightly (about 2–3 mm / ⅛ in); they need some light to germinate. Choose full sun to light shade and well-drained soil—poor to average soil is fine. Space plants about 15–30 cm (6–12 in) apart. Keep soil lightly moist until germination, usually 7–14 days.
How to Care for Tidy Tips:
Water moderately during establishment; once growing, Tidy Tips is drought tolerant and prefers soil to dry slightly between waterings. Too much water or rich fertilizer causes floppy growth and fewer flowers. Fertilizer is usually unnecessary. Plants bloom in cool spring weather with cheerful yellow-and-white flowers that attract pollinators. Deadheading isn’t required, but trimming spent blooms can tidy plants and extend flowering a bit. As temperatures heat up, plants naturally finish—let some flowers go to seed if you want easy self-sowing for next season.
