American Common Persimmon Tree, Well-Rooted Starter Plant (Diospyros virginiana) is a hardy native fruit tree known for its sweet, flavorful orange fruits and attractive seasonal foliage. This long-lived deciduous tree produces round persimmons that develop from green to golden-orange when mature, with a rich honey-like sweetness and soft, custard-like texture when fully ripe. Native to eastern North America, American Persimmon trees are valued for edible fruit production, wildlife attraction, shade, and ornamental beauty. The tree adapts well to a wide range of soils and can eventually reach 30–60 feet tall in ideal conditions, making it an excellent choice for orchards, food forests, and natural landscapes.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Fall & Early Spring (Dormant Season Preferred)

Plant bare-root or container-grown starter trees during cooler seasons when the tree is not actively growing.

Choose a planting time after extreme heat has passed and before the ground freezes in colder regions.

American Persimmon grows best in USDA Zones 4–9 and prefers full sun for the strongest growth and highest fruit production.

How to Grow American Common Persimmon Tree

Select a planting location with full sun exposure, ideally receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Choose well-drained soil. American Persimmon tolerates many soil types, including sandy, loamy, rocky, and moderately clay soils, but performs best in fertile soil with good drainage.

Dig a planting hole approximately twice as wide as the root system but no deeper than the original root ball height.

Place the tree in the hole with the root flare slightly above soil level. Avoid planting too deeply, as buried trunks may develop rot.

Backfill with native soil and gently firm the soil around the roots to remove large air pockets.

Water deeply after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.

Apply 2–3 inches of mulch around the tree base to conserve moisture and suppress weeds. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk.

Young trees benefit from regular watering during the first growing season while the root system becomes established.

Space trees approximately 20–35 feet apart if planting multiple persimmon trees for fruit production.

American Persimmons are often dioecious, meaning male and female flowers usually occur on separate trees. Planting multiple trees can improve pollination and fruit production.

Trees grown from seed may take 5–10 years or more to produce fruit, while grafted varieties typically fruit earlier.

How to Care for American Common Persimmon Tree

Water deeply and regularly during the first few years, especially during dry periods.

Once established, American Persimmon is drought tolerant and requires less supplemental watering.

Avoid excessive watering or constantly wet soil, as poor drainage can damage roots.

Apply compost or a balanced slow-release fertilizer in spring if growth is weak or soil fertility is poor.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which can encourage leafy growth while reducing fruit production.

Maintain a weed-free area around young trees to reduce competition for nutrients and moisture.

Prune during late winter or early spring while the tree is dormant.

Remove damaged, crossing, or weak branches to create a strong structure and improve airflow.

Young trees may benefit from training to develop a central leader and strong branch framework.

Protect young trunks from rodents, deer, and mechanical damage when necessary.

Monitor for common pests such as persimmon fruit flies, scale insects, aphids, and caterpillars.

American Persimmon trees are generally resistant and low-maintenance compared with many other fruit trees.

Fruits typically ripen in fall, usually from September through November depending on climate and variety.

Harvest when fruits become soft and fully orange. Unlike many fruits, American Persimmons are best eaten when fully ripe and soft rather than firm.

Ripe fruits can be eaten fresh, dried, used in jams, baked goods, puddings, smoothies, and traditional persimmon recipes.
