In shorter seasons, start indoors 2–3 weeks early in large biodegradable pots and transplant carefully without disturbing roots. Soak seeds 4–6 hours before planting for faster sprouting. Plant seeds 2–3 cm (about 1 in) deep in rich, well-drained soil. Give full sun and plenty of space: hills or mounds work best for warmth and drainage. Space hills about 1.5–2 m (5–6 ft) apart, placing 3–4 seeds per hill, then thin to the strongest 1–2 plants once they’re established. Keep soil evenly moist until germination, usually 5–10 days in warm ground.
