Cranberry Bean Seeds – Taylor’s Horticultural Bush (Phaseolus vulgaris) produce compact, productive plants with attractive cream-colored pods streaked with bright red. Inside, the plump tan beans are beautifully marked with dark red speckles. Also known as Taylor Dwarf Horticultural or Pink Cranberry Bean, this heirloom variety has a rich, nutty flavor and smooth, creamy texture. The beans can be harvested young as snap beans, picked later for fresh shelling, or allowed to fully mature for use as dry beans in soups, stews, chili, and baked dishes.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Late Spring & Early Summer (Warm-Season Crop)

Sow directly outdoors after all danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature has reached at least 60°F (16°C). Beans germinate more reliably in warm soil and may rot when planted in cold, wet conditions.

How to Grow Cranberry Bean Seeds – Taylor’s Horticultural Bush

Direct sow the seeds outdoors, as beans generally do not respond well to having their roots disturbed during transplanting.

Choose a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Grow in fertile, loose, well-drained soil with a preferred pH between 6.0 and 7.5.

Sow seeds 1–1½ inches deep.

Space seeds approximately 3–4 inches apart in rows spaced 18–24 inches apart.

Thin seedlings to approximately 6 inches apart after they become established.

Keep the soil evenly moist but not soggy during germination.

Maintain soil temperatures between 60–85°F (16–29°C), with temperatures near 80°F (27°C) providing especially favorable germination conditions.

Seeds typically germinate within 5–10 days under warm, suitable conditions.

Taylor’s Horticultural is primarily a bush or short semi-runner variety and usually does not require a tall trellis, although light support may help keep heavily loaded plants upright.

How to Care for Cranberry Bean Plants – Taylor’s Horticultural Bush

Water regularly throughout the growing season, providing approximately 1 inch of water per week when rainfall is insufficient.

Maintain consistent moisture during flowering and pod development, as drought stress during these stages can reduce pod formation and bean size.

Avoid overwatering or leaving the plants in waterlogged soil, which can encourage root rot.

Water near the base of the plants and avoid frequently wetting the foliage.

Amend the soil with compost or well-rotted organic matter before planting.

Beans usually require only light feeding. Avoid fertilizers containing excessive nitrogen, as they can encourage leafy growth while delaying flowering and reducing pod production.

Apply mulch after the soil has warmed to retain moisture, control weeds, and protect the plants’ shallow roots.

Avoid cultivating deeply around established plants because their roots can be easily damaged.

Harvest young pods early if using them as snap beans.

For fresh shell beans, harvest when the pods become tough and slightly dry while the beans inside are fully developed but still soft.

For dry beans, leave the pods on the plants until they are completely dry and the beans rattle inside. If rainy or cold weather arrives, pull the plants and finish drying them indoors.

Expect fresh shell beans in approximately 65–70 days and fully dried beans in around 80 days, depending on weather and growing conditions.
