Korean Radish Seeds for Planting – Non-GMO Cheong Du Hybrid Kimchi Radish Seeds (Raphanus sativus) produce vigorous, uniform plants with large cylindrical roots, crisp white flesh, and attractive green shoulders. The name “Cheong Du” refers to the variety’s characteristic green-topped roots. Mature radishes commonly reach approximately 8–10 inches long and weigh around 2–3 pounds under favorable growing conditions. Their dense, juicy flesh has a mild sweetness, refreshing crunch, and pleasantly peppery finish. Cheong Du Korean Radishes are ideal for traditional kimchi and kkakdugi, as well as soups, stews, braised dishes, pickles, salads, stir-fries, and fresh snacking. This productive cool-season hybrid is valued for its consistent root shape, excellent texture, dependable yields, and relatively fast maturity.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Early Spring & Late Summer to Early Fall (Cool-Season Crop)

Sow seeds directly outdoors in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, or plant in late summer for a fall harvest. Cheong Du generally produces its highest-quality roots when planted in late summer and allowed to mature during cool autumn weather. Shortening days and cooler temperatures encourage smooth root development, crisp texture, mild flavor, and reduced risk of premature flowering.

Radish seeds can be sown once soil temperatures reach approximately 40°F (4°C). For faster and more reliable germination, soil temperatures between 55–75°F (13–24°C) are ideal. Korean Radishes perform best when air temperatures remain between approximately 50–75°F (10–24°C). Temperatures consistently above 80°F (27°C) may cause slow root development, hollow interiors, stronger flavor, poor texture, or premature flowering.

For a spring crop, plant approximately 2–4 weeks before the average last frost date. For a fall crop, sow seeds approximately 8–10 weeks before the first expected hard frost. Established radish plants tolerate cool conditions and light frost, but mature roots should be harvested before the soil freezes solid.

How to Grow Cheong Du Hybrid Korean Radish Seeds

Direct sowing is recommended because Korean Radishes develop long taproots that may become forked, stunted, or misshapen when transplanted. Plant the seeds directly in their permanent garden bed, raised bed, or deep container.

Choose a location that receives at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily. Full sun encourages vigorous leaf growth and properly developed roots. Light afternoon shade may be helpful when seeds are planted during warm late-summer weather, but excessive shade can produce large leafy tops and undersized roots.

Plant in fertile, loose, well-drained soil with a slightly acidic to neutral pH between approximately 6.0 and 7.0. Sandy loam or loose garden soil enriched with finished compost is ideal. Heavy, rocky, or compacted soil may restrict the roots and produce rough, branched, or unevenly shaped radishes.

Loosen the soil at least 12 inches deep before planting. Remove stones, roots, hard clumps, and other debris that could interfere with the developing taproots. Raised beds are especially useful in gardens with heavy clay soil because they provide deeper, looser soil and make harvesting long roots easier.

Mix finished compost or well-rotted organic matter into the planting area before sowing. Avoid fresh manure because its readily available nitrogen may encourage excessive foliage, branched roots, and irregular development.

Sow seeds approximately ½–1 inch deep. Larger radish varieties such as Cheong Du can be planted slightly deeper than small spring radishes, particularly in loose or rapidly drying soil.

Place seeds approximately 1–2 inches apart. Once the seedlings are established, thin them to a final spacing of approximately 4–6 inches between plants. Space rows approximately 12–18 inches apart. Adequate spacing is essential because Cheong Du produces substantially larger roots than common round radishes. Crowded plants may develop large leaves without forming full-sized roots.

Keep the soil surface consistently moist during germination without allowing it to become saturated. Heavy rain or excessive overhead watering may create a crust over the soil surface and make seedling emergence difficult.

Seeds typically germinate within approximately 5–10 days when soil temperatures remain between 55–75°F (13–24°C). Germination may take longer in cold soil.

Thin the seedlings promptly after they develop their first true leaves. Cut unwanted seedlings at soil level rather than pulling them when the plants are crowded, as pulling may disturb the roots of nearby seedlings. The removed young leaves can be washed and used as edible radish greens.

Cheong Du Korean Radishes grow as upright plants and do not require trellises, stakes, or other support structures.

Container growing is possible when using a deep planter with excellent drainage. Choose a container approximately 12–16 inches deep or larger so the roots have enough room to reach their mature length. Fill the container with loose, stone-free potting soil, maintain approximately 4–6 inches between plants, and check moisture frequently because containers dry more quickly than garden beds.

Succession planting can provide an extended harvest. Sow a small quantity of seeds every 10–14 days while temperatures remain cool enough for proper root development. Avoid sowing repeated crops when prolonged temperatures above 80°F (27°C) are expected.

How to Care for Cheong Du Hybrid Korean Radish Plants

Water deeply and consistently throughout the growing period. Uniform moisture encourages rapid growth, tender flesh, balanced flavor, and smooth roots. Drought stress may cause the roots to become tough, woody, hollow, or excessively spicy. Sudden heavy watering after a dry period may cause mature roots to crack or split.

Provide approximately 1 inch of water per week when rainfall is insufficient. Sandy soil and containers may require more frequent watering. Check the soil below the surface rather than relying only on its appearance, and water whenever the upper layer begins to dry.

Avoid allowing the soil to remain continuously soggy. Poor drainage can encourage root rot, seedling loss, and reduced root quality. Water near the base of the plants whenever possible and avoid frequent late-evening overhead irrigation.

Apply a thin layer of clean straw, shredded leaves, grass clippings free from herbicides, or finished compost around established plants. Mulch helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain cooler, more consistent soil temperatures.

Cheong Du Korean Radishes grow rapidly and perform best with moderate, balanced fertility. Soil amended with compost before planting may not require additional fertilizer. When plant growth appears weak or pale, apply a light feeding of balanced vegetable fertilizer according to the product directions.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer. Too much nitrogen may produce vigorous leafy tops while delaying root enlargement or reducing overall root quality. Fertilizer should never be allowed to contact the stems or developing roots directly.

Keep the planting area free from weeds, particularly during germination and early establishment. Larger Korean Radishes require a longer growing period than small spring radishes, so weed control remains important throughout the season. Cultivate only the upper surface of the soil because deep hoeing may cut or damage the developing roots.

Monitor plants for flea beetles, cabbage maggots, aphids, slugs, snails, and wireworms. Flea beetles create numerous small holes in young leaves, while cabbage maggots and wireworms may tunnel into the roots and reduce their quality. Lightweight floating row covers placed over the bed immediately after sowing can help prevent flying insects from reaching young plants.

Common disease concerns include Alternaria leaf spot, black rot, clubroot, downy mildew, and fungal root rots. Reduce disease problems by rotating radishes and other cabbage-family vegetables to a different location each season, maintaining proper spacing, improving drainage, and removing diseased plant material from the garden.

Cheong Du Hybrid Korean Radishes are generally ready for harvest approximately 60–65 days after sowing. Mature roots commonly measure about 8–10 inches long and weigh approximately 2–3 pounds, although size may vary with spacing, soil fertility, moisture, and temperature.

Begin checking the roots when their green shoulders become clearly visible above the soil. Harvest when the roots feel firm, have reached the desired size, and display smooth green-and-white coloring. Do not leave mature radishes in warm soil for too long, as overmature roots may become fibrous, hollow, cracked, or excessively strong in flavor.

Loosen the soil beside and underneath each root with a garden fork or spade before lifting it. Avoid pulling large roots forcefully by their leaves because the tops may break or the roots may snap in compacted soil.

After harvesting, remove the leafy tops promptly because the leaves continue drawing moisture from the roots. Wash the radishes, dry them thoroughly, and store them in perforated or loosely closed bags in the refrigerator. Refrigerated radishes generally maintain their best quality for approximately 1–2 weeks. Under colder, humid storage conditions, large Asian radishes may remain usable for considerably longer, potentially up to approximately two months.
