How to Grow Korean Green Shiso Seeds (Green Perilla / Kkaennip):
Korean Green Shiso is usually green perilla (Perilla frutescens), a warm-season annual grown for fragrant edible leaves. Start seeds indoors 4–6 weeks before last frost, or direct sow outdoors once nights are warm. Perilla seeds can be slow to wake up, so boost germination by chilling seeds in the fridge for 1–2 weeks, then soaking in room-temp water for a few hours before sowing. Sow on the surface or cover extremely lightly (1–2 mm) because they need light to germinate. Keep soil evenly moist and warm; germination is often 7–21 days, sometimes longer. When seedlings have 2–3 true leaves, thin or transplant to about 25–30 cm (10–12 in) apart. Plant in full sun for fastest growth; in very hot climates, morning sun with light afternoon shade helps prevent stress.
How to Care for Korean Green Shiso:
Water regularly during early growth, then keep moisture steady—perilla likes consistently moist soil but hates being waterlogged. Mulch lightly to cool roots and reduce drying. Feed gently: compost at planting plus a mild balanced fertilizer every 3–4 weeks (especially in pots) is plenty; too much nitrogen makes huge soft leaves with weaker flavor. Pinch the growing tips when plants reach 15–20 cm tall to encourage branching and lots of side shoots. Harvest often by cutting outer leaves or snipping the top sets; frequent picking delays flowering and keeps leaves tender. Perilla self-seeds easily, so remove flower spikes early if you don’t want volunteers next season, or let a few plants flower if you want seed. Pests are usually minor; watch for aphids or leaf chewers and rinse off with water or hand-pick. In warm, bright conditions with steady water, Korean Green Shiso will keep producing leaves for months.
