How to Grow Radish Seeds – White Icicle:
White Icicle radish is a fast, cool-season variety with long, slender white roots. Direct sow outdoors because radishes grow too quickly to transplant well. Plant in early spring as soon as soil can be worked, and again in late summer/early fall for a second crop. Choose full sun (light shade is ok in heat) and loose, well-drained soil. Sow seeds about 1 cm (½ in) deep, in rows, then thin seedlings to 5–7 cm (2–3 in) apart so roots can size up straight. Keep soil evenly moist; germination is quick—usually 3–7 days. For continuous harvest, sow a small batch every 7–10 days.
How to Care for White Icicle Radishes:
Water steadily—dry spells make roots woody or overly spicy, while soggy soil can cause splitting. A light compost mix-in before planting is enough; avoid heavy nitrogen fertilizer or you’ll get lots of leaves and small roots. Keep weeds down so young plants don’t compete. Harvest promptly when roots reach about 10–15 cm (4–6 in) long—usually 25–35 days from sowing—because leaving them too long makes them pithy. In hotter weather, give a bit of afternoon shade and extra moisture to keep flavor mild and texture crisp.
