Red & Black Carrot Seeds for Planting – Atomic Red & Black Nebula (Daucus carota) include two striking carrot varieties with dramatically different root colors. Atomic Red Carrot produces long, tapered roots approximately 8–10 inches long with coral-red to deep red skin and an orange-red interior. Its crisp roots have a mild, sweet flavor, and the red color becomes even more intense when cooked. Black Nebula Carrot produces long, tapered roots with extremely dark purple to nearly black skin and deep purple flesh all the way through, creating one of the darkest carrots available. It has a crisp texture with a sweet, slightly earthy flavor.

The main difference between these two varieties is their color and culinary appearance. Atomic Red offers vivid red-orange roots with a sweeter, classic carrot flavor, while Black Nebula produces dramatic purple-black roots with dark flesh that retains much of its color when cooked. Both are excellent for fresh eating, salads, roasting, steaming, stir-fries, juicing, soups, and colorful vegetable dishes.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Early Spring & Late Summer to Early Fall (Cool-Season Crop)

Direct sow seeds outdoors approximately 2–3 weeks before the last expected spring frost. A second crop can be planted in late summer for a fall harvest.

Carrots grow best in cool conditions. Seeds can begin germinating around 40°F (4°C), with optimal germination generally between 55–70°F (13–21°C).

How to Grow Red & Black Carrot Seeds

Direct sowing is recommended because carrots develop long taproots and do not transplant well.

Choose a location receiving at least 6–8 hours of direct sunlight daily and provide loose, deep, well-drained soil.

Sow seeds approximately ¼–½ inch deep.

Keep the soil consistently moist during germination. Carrot seeds may take approximately 1–3 weeks to emerge.

Thin seedlings to approximately 2–3 inches apart, with rows spaced about 12–18 inches apart.

Loosen the soil at least 10–12 inches deep and remove rocks or hard clumps that may cause forked or misshapen roots.

Both varieties grow well in raised beds and deep containers with excellent drainage.

Mix finished compost or aged organic matter into the soil before planting, but avoid fresh manure and excessive nitrogen.

How to Care for Red & Black Carrot Plants

Water consistently so the soil remains evenly moist throughout root development. Drought or irregular watering can produce tough, undersized, or misshapen carrots.

Apply a light layer of mulch to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and maintain cooler soil temperatures.

Keep weeds under control, especially while seedlings are young, but cultivate carefully to avoid damaging the developing roots.

Monitor for common carrot pests such as carrot rust flies, aphids, and root-feeding insects.

Atomic Red Carrots generally mature in approximately 70–80 days. Harvest when the roots develop their characteristic deep red color and reach approximately 8–10 inches long. Cooking can deepen their red coloration and enhance their mild sweetness.

Black Nebula Carrots generally mature in approximately 70–75 days. Harvest when the roots reach approximately 7–10 inches long and develop a deep purple-black color from skin to core.

Loosen the surrounding soil before pulling mature carrots to prevent long roots from breaking.

Remove the leafy tops after harvest and store unwashed carrots under cool, humid conditions. Refrigerated carrots can remain fresh for several weeks when properly stored.
