Green Flesh Honeydew Melon Seeds (Cucumis melo) produce vigorous, spreading vines that yield smooth, round to oval melons filled with sweet, juicy pale green flesh. Honeydew melons are prized for their refreshing flavor, tender-crisp texture, and naturally high sugar content. They are excellent for fresh eating, fruit salads, smoothies, chilled desserts, and summer drinks. This warm-season crop thrives in sunny conditions and can produce an abundant harvest when given fertile soil, consistent moisture, and plenty of growing space.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Late Spring & Early Summer (Warm-Season Crop)

Sow after all danger of frost has passed and the soil temperature remains consistently above 70°F (21°C). In cooler climates, start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the final expected frost date.

How to Grow Green Flesh Honeydew Melon Seeds

Sow seeds directly outdoors after the last frost or start them indoors in biodegradable pots 3–4 weeks before transplanting.

Choose a location with full sun and fertile, loose, well-drained soil.

Sow seeds ½–1 inch deep.

Plant 2–3 seeds per hill, spacing hills 3–4 feet apart and rows 5–6 feet apart.

Keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged during germination.

Maintain soil temperatures between 70–90°F (21–32°C) for the best germination results.

Seeds typically germinate within 7–10 days.

Thin seedlings to the strongest one or two plants per hill after they develop their first true leaves.

Avoid disturbing the roots when transplanting, as melon plants are sensitive to root damage.

How to Care for Green Flesh Honeydew Melon Plants

Water deeply and consistently, especially while plants are flowering and fruits are developing.

Apply water near the base of the plant and avoid wetting the leaves to reduce the risk of fungal disease.

Grow in nutrient-rich soil amended with compost, aged manure, or other organic matter.

Feed with a balanced fertilizer early in the growing season, then switch to a fertilizer lower in nitrogen and higher in phosphorus and potassium after flowering begins.

Mulch around the plants to retain soil moisture, regulate temperature, suppress weeds, and keep developing fruits clean.

Allow plenty of room for vines to spread or train them onto a strong trellis. Support hanging fruits with melon slings when growing vertically.

Encourage pollinators, as bees are essential for successful fruit formation.

Reduce watering slightly as the melons approach maturity to help improve sweetness and prevent splitting.

Harvest when the rind changes from green to creamy white or pale yellow, the blossom end gives slightly when pressed, and the fruit develops a strong, sweet fragrance.

Plants typically mature within 80–100 days after sowing, depending on climate and growing conditions.
