Black Spanish Round Radish Seeds for Planting – Non-GMO Heirloom Seeds (Raphanus sativus) produce distinctive winter radishes with rough, coal-black skin and crisp, creamy-white flesh. The large, globe-shaped roots commonly reach approximately 3–4 inches in diameter and develop a bold, peppery flavor that becomes milder and slightly sweeter when cooked. This historic heirloom variety is excellent for fresh salads, thinly sliced garnishes, sandwiches, roasting, sautéing, soups, stews, fermentation, and pickling. Its thick skin, dense flesh, excellent cold tolerance, and long storage potential make Black Spanish Round an outstanding choice for fall and winter gardens.

Unlike small spring radishes, Black Spanish Round is a slower-growing storage variety that develops best as summer days become shorter and temperatures begin to cool. Its vigorous leafy tops and substantial roots require more growing space than varieties such as Cherry Belle, but the mature radishes reward gardeners with dependable yields, firm texture, and excellent keeping quality.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Mid to Late Summer & Early Fall (Cool-Season Winter Crop)

Sow Black Spanish Round Radish seeds directly outdoors from midsummer through early fall so the roots mature during shortening days and cool autumn weather. In most climates, plant approximately 8–10 weeks before the expected first hard frost. Gardeners in regions with mild winters may continue sowing into fall for late fall, winter, or early spring harvests.

Although this variety can sometimes be grown in early spring, fall planting usually produces better root development and reduces the risk of premature flowering. Increasing day length and hot weather may cause winter radishes to bolt before forming properly sized roots.

Black Spanish Round Radishes grow best when temperatures remain between approximately 50–75°F (10–24°C). Seeds germinate reliably in moderately warm soil, with an optimal soil temperature of approximately 65–85°F (18–29°C). Established plants tolerate cool weather and light frost, and exposure to cool fall temperatures can help produce firm, flavorful roots.

How to Grow Black Spanish Round Radish Seeds

Direct sowing is recommended because radishes develop sensitive taproots and generally do not transplant well. Plant the seeds in their permanent garden bed, raised bed, or container rather than starting them indoors.

Choose a planting location that receives full sun, ideally at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Light afternoon shade may be beneficial when planting during late summer in regions with intense heat, but excessive shade can produce abundant foliage and poorly developed roots.

Plant Black Spanish Round Radishes in loose, fertile, well-drained soil. The soil should be free from rocks, compacted clumps, undecomposed roots, and other debris that could restrict growth or cause misshapen radishes. A slightly acidic to neutral soil pH between approximately 6.0 and 7.0 is ideal.

Before sowing, loosen the soil to a depth of at least 8–10 inches. Although the roots are round rather than elongated, deeply prepared soil encourages even development, improves drainage, and makes harvesting easier. Mix finished compost or aged organic matter into the planting area to improve soil structure and moisture retention.

Sow seeds approximately ¼–½ inch deep. Planting at the shallower end of this range is suitable for heavy soil, while seeds may be placed slightly deeper in loose or rapidly drying soil.

Place seeds approximately 1–2 inches apart and thin the seedlings after emergence. Allow a final spacing of approximately 3–4 inches between plants, with rows spaced 12–24 inches apart. Proper spacing is especially important because this winter variety produces much larger roots and leaf tops than common spring radishes.

Keep the soil surface consistently moist during germination without allowing it to become waterlogged. Seeds generally germinate within approximately 3–14 days, depending on soil temperature, moisture, and planting depth. Warm, evenly moist soil usually results in the fastest emergence.

Thin crowded seedlings promptly by cutting unwanted plants at soil level or gently removing them before the roots begin to enlarge. Overcrowding can result in small, misshapen roots and excessive leafy growth.

Black Spanish Round Radishes grow as compact, upright plants and do not require trellises, stakes, or other support structures.

Container growing is possible when using pots or planters at least 10–12 inches deep with adequate drainage holes. Fill containers with loose, high-quality potting soil and maintain approximately 4 inches of space between mature plants. Containers may dry faster than garden beds, so monitor soil moisture carefully during warm weather.

Apply finished compost before planting, but avoid fresh manure or excessive nitrogen fertilizer. Too much nitrogen encourages large leafy tops at the expense of root development.

How to Care for Black Spanish Round Radish Plants

Water regularly throughout the growing season so the soil remains evenly moist. Consistent moisture encourages steady growth, crisp flesh, and properly shaped roots. Extended dry periods followed by heavy watering may cause roots to split, while prolonged drought can produce tough, woody, or excessively spicy radishes.

Avoid keeping the soil saturated. Although radishes need dependable moisture, poorly drained conditions can restrict root growth and encourage decay. Raised beds are useful in gardens with heavy clay soil or frequent rainfall.

Apply a light layer of clean straw, shredded leaves, or finished compost around established seedlings. Mulch helps conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and keep the soil cooler as the crop develops during late summer.

Black Spanish Round Radishes usually need little additional fertilizer when planted in fertile soil amended with compost. When growth appears weak, apply a light feeding of balanced vegetable fertilizer. Avoid high-nitrogen products, which may stimulate leafy growth while delaying or reducing root formation.

Keep the planting area free from weeds, especially while the seedlings are young. Remove weeds by hand or cultivate only the upper surface of the soil to avoid damaging the developing radish roots.

Monitor plants for flea beetles, which create numerous small holes in the leaves, and root maggots, which tunnel into developing roots. Floating row covers placed over the bed immediately after sowing can help protect young plants from flying insect pests. Ensure that the edges of the cover are secured to the soil.

Crop rotation, adequate spacing, well-drained soil, and clean garden practices help reduce problems with root rot and other soilborne diseases. Avoid repeatedly planting radishes or closely related cabbage-family crops in the same location.

Black Spanish Round Radishes are generally ready for harvest approximately 55–60 days after sowing, although cool temperatures and reduced sunlight may extend the growing period.

Begin checking the roots when their dark shoulders become visible above the soil. Harvest when the radishes are firm, round, and approximately 3–4 inches in diameter. Mature roots should have deep black skin and dense, bright white flesh.

Loosen the soil around each root with a garden fork before gently lifting it from the ground. Avoid pulling forcefully by the leaves, especially in compacted soil, because the tops may separate from the heavy roots.

Black Spanish Round Radishes can remain in the garden through cool fall weather, but harvest them before the ground freezes solid. Do not leave mature roots in warm soil for too long, as overmature radishes may become woody, hollow, or unpleasantly strong.

After harvesting, remove the leafy tops, brush away excess soil, and allow the roots to dry before storage. Do not wash radishes intended for extended storage until shortly before use. Keep them in perforated bags in the refrigerator or pack them in slightly damp sand in a cold, humid root cellar. Their thick skin and firm flesh allow properly stored winter radishes to remain usable considerably longer than tender spring varieties.
