Tendersweet carrots are a sweet, tender, long-root type that needs loose soil to grow straight. Direct sow outdoors because carrots hate transplanting. Plant in cool weather: early spring as soon as soil is workable, or late summer/early fall for a fall crop. Choose full sun (at least 6 hours) and prep a deep bed: remove rocks, break up soil 25–30 cm (10–12 in) down, and mix in compost if soil is poor. Sow seeds very shallow, about 3–6 mm (⅛–¼ in) deep in rows, then lightly cover and firm the soil. Keep the surface consistently moist until germination, which can take 7–21 days. When seedlings are 2–5 cm tall, thin to about 5–8 cm (2–3 in) apart so roots have room to size up.

How to Care for Tendersweet Carrots:
Water evenly and deeply; inconsistent watering causes split or woody roots, while soggy soil can rot them. Aim to keep soil lightly moist, especially during root expansion. Mulch helps hold moisture and prevents the tops from turning green. Feed lightly—too much nitrogen makes leafy tops and skinny roots—so a small side-dress of compost or a low-nitrogen veggie fertilizer once seedlings are established is enough. Keep weeds down because carrots compete poorly when young. Harvest when roots reach full color and size (often 70–85 days), loosening soil first to avoid snapping long roots. For extra sweetness, let them size up in cool weather; Tendersweet gets noticeably sweeter after a light chill.
