How to Grow Chinese Toon Seeds (Toona sinensis):
Chinese Toon is a fast-growing deciduous tree grown for its fragrant young shoots. Use fresh seeds if possible—toon seed loses viability quickly. Before sowing, lightly scarify if the coat feels hard, then soak seeds in warm water overnight (about 12–24 hours) to speed germination. Start seeds indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost, or sow outdoors in spring when temperatures are mild and stable. Sow very shallow—about 3–5 mm (⅛ in) deep—on a well-draining seed mix, then gently press soil. Keep evenly moist but not wet; ideal germination temps are around 20–25°C (68–77°F). Germination is typically 1–3 weeks but can be uneven. Once seedlings have a few true leaves, pot up into deeper containers to support the developing taproot. Transplant outdoors after frost danger passes. Plant in full sun to light shade with fertile, well-drained soil and space trees about 1.5–3 m (5–10 ft) apart depending on whether you want a small harvest tree or a full-size shade tree.

How to Care for Chinese Toon:
Water regularly during the first year so roots establish, especially in hot or dry spells. After establishment, Chinese Toon is fairly drought tolerant but grows faster and produces better shoots with steady moisture. Mulch around the base to keep soil cool and reduce weeds, but keep mulch off the trunk. Feed in spring with compost or a balanced fertilizer; avoid over-nitrogen late in the season if you mainly want tender shoots. For leaf/shoot harvest, start light picking once the plant is well rooted—snip the tender new flushes, leaving enough leaves for recovery. Regular tip-harvesting encourages bushier growth and more edible shoots. If you want a compact shrub form, prune back after harvest or in late winter; if you want a taller tree, prune minimally and remove low suckers. Pests are usually minor; the main problems come from soggy soil (root rot) or extreme heat stress. In colder areas, young trees appreciate a winter mulch and some wind protection. Each spring the plant flushes new aromatic shoots, and flavor/production improves as it matures.
