Curly Devil’s Backbone, Variegated Succulent, Live Plant in a 2.5-Inch Pot (Euphorbia tithymaloides, Variegated Curly Form) is a distinctive tropical succulent shrub featuring wavy, curled leaves with green, cream, pale yellow, and occasional pink or red tones. Its unusual zigzag stems create the “devil’s backbone” appearance that gives the plant its popular name. Also known as Zigzag Plant or Pedilanthus, this low-maintenance ornamental is excellent for indoor collections, sunny windowsills, patio containers, rock gardens, and warm-climate landscapes. The plant’s variegation and pink coloration become more noticeable when it receives sufficient bright light.

Planting Season

Best planted or repotted in: Spring & Early Summer (Warm-Season Tropical Succulent)

Indoor plants may be repotted throughout the year, but spring and early summer are preferred because the plant is actively growing and can recover more quickly from transplanting.

Outdoor planting is recommended after all danger of frost has passed and nighttime temperatures remain consistently above approximately 60°F (16°C). Devil’s Backbone performs best between 60–85°F (16–29°C) and is generally suitable for outdoor cultivation in USDA Zones 9–11.

How to Grow a Curly Devil’s Backbone Variegated Plant

Carefully remove the plant from its 2.5-inch nursery pot without pulling on the stems or breaking apart the root ball.

Repot it into a container approximately 1–2 inches wider than the original pot. Always choose a container with unobstructed drainage holes.

Use a loose, fast-draining cactus or succulent potting mix. Additional perlite, pumice, or coarse sand may be added to improve drainage.

Position the plant at the same depth it was growing in its nursery pot. Avoid burying the stem or crown deeply.

After repotting, wait briefly before watering if the roots were damaged. Otherwise, water lightly and allow all excess water to drain completely.

Place the newly repotted plant in bright, indirect light for several days before gradually introducing it to gentle direct sunlight.

Provide bright, indirect light indoors. A position near an east-, west-, or lightly shaded south-facing window is ideal.

The plant can tolerate some direct sunlight, particularly gentle morning sun, but intense afternoon sun may scorch the variegated foliage.

Low-light conditions may cause stretched, weak growth and reduced variegation. Rotate the pot regularly to encourage balanced growth.

When planting outdoors, choose a location with partial shade, filtered sunlight, or morning sun with afternoon protection. Use well-drained soil and avoid low areas where water collects.

How to Care for a Curly Devil’s Backbone Variegated Plant

Allow the upper 1–2 inches of soil to dry before watering again. Water deeply enough that excess water flows from the drainage holes, then empty the saucer.

Reduce watering during winter when growth slows. Never water according to a fixed schedule without first checking the soil.

Avoid keeping the potting mix continuously wet. Overwatering and poor drainage are the most common causes of root rot, yellow leaves, and stem decline.

Do not allow the plant to remain completely dry for extended periods, as severe drought may cause leaf drop.

Apply a diluted, balanced houseplant or succulent fertilizer approximately once every four to six weeks during active spring and summer growth.

Do not fertilize immediately after delivery or repotting. Wait until the plant has adjusted and begins producing healthy new growth.

Reduce or discontinue fertilizer during fall and winter.

Average household humidity is generally suitable. Provide good air circulation and avoid keeping the foliage constantly wet.

Prune long or uneven stems during the active growing season to maintain a fuller, more compact shape. New growth usually develops beneath the cut.

Inspect regularly for mealybugs and spider mites, especially where leaves join the stems. Isolate the plant and treat pests promptly if discovered.

Keep the plant away from cold windows, air-conditioning vents, heaters, and sudden temperature changes.

Move outdoor containers indoors before temperatures approach freezing. Young plants in small pots are especially vulnerable to cold damage.

Important Safety Notice: All parts of Devil’s Backbone contain a white, milky latex sap. The sap can irritate the skin and may cause serious eye injury. Ingestion can irritate the mouth and digestive system. Wear gloves when pruning or repotting, wash exposed skin promptly, and keep the plant away from children, cats, dogs, and other pets.
