Fall Willow Flower Live Plant – 8–16 Inches Tall | White Flowering Perennial Shrub (Itea virginica) is a beautiful deciduous shrub prized for its graceful clusters of fragrant white flowers and colorful seasonal foliage. Also known as Virginia Sweetspire or Virginia Willow, this adaptable perennial produces cascading, bottlebrush-like flower clusters in late spring to early summer that attract bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators. As the season changes, its green foliage develops attractive shades of red, orange, and burgundy, providing excellent fall garden color.

This listing includes one healthy live plant approximately 8–16 inches tall, ready for transplanting into gardens, borders, foundation plantings, woodland edges, rain gardens, or large containers. Once established, the shrub develops a naturally spreading, multi-stemmed form and can be used individually or planted in groups for a colorful flowering hedge.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Spring or Fall

Plant in spring after severe freezing weather has passed, or in fall several weeks before the ground freezes so roots have time to establish. Virginia Sweetspire is generally hardy in USDA Zones 5–9.

How to Plant Fall Willow Flower Live Plant

Choose a location with full sun to partial shade. More sunlight generally encourages heavier flowering and stronger fall foliage color.

Plant in moist, fertile, well-drained soil. This adaptable shrub also tolerates clay and periodically wet soil, making it useful for rain gardens and naturally moist areas.

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball but no deeper than the root system. Position the plant so the top of the root ball remains level with the surrounding soil.

Backfill gently, water deeply after planting, and apply approximately 2–3 inches of mulch around the root zone while keeping mulch away from the main stems.

Space plants approximately 3–6 feet apart depending on whether you want a dense hedge or a more natural spreading form.

How to Care for Fall Willow Flower Plants

Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish a strong root system. Keep the soil consistently moist but avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Apply mulch annually to conserve moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots from temperature fluctuations.

Feed lightly with compost or a balanced shrub fertilizer in spring if additional nutrients are needed.

Prune after flowering when necessary to remove damaged branches, control size, or maintain the desired shape.

Established plants produce fragrant white flower clusters in late spring to early summer, followed by attractive foliage that can turn brilliant red, orange, and burgundy in fall.

With proper care, this hardy perennial shrub returns year after year and provides multiple seasons of garden interest, from white flowers and pollinator activity to colorful autumn foliage.
