French Breakfast Radish Seeds for Planting – Non-GMO Heirloom Seeds (Raphanus sativus) produce attractive elongated roots with bright scarlet-red tops, crisp white tips, and tender white flesh. This classic heirloom radish is known for its mild, slightly peppery flavor and crisp texture, making it excellent for fresh snacking, salads, sandwiches, garnishes, roasting, and pickling. French Breakfast Radishes grow quickly and perform especially well in cool spring and fall weather.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Early Spring & Late Summer to Early Fall (Cool-Season Crop)

Sow seeds directly outdoors approximately 4–6 weeks before the last expected spring frost, or plant again in late summer for a fall harvest.

Radishes grow best between approximately 50–75°F (10–24°C). Seeds germinate well when soil temperatures are around 55–75°F (13–24°C).

How to Grow French Breakfast Radish Seeds

Direct sow seeds in loose, fertile, well-drained soil.

Sow seeds approximately ¼–½ inch deep.

Plant seeds about 1 inch apart and thin seedlings to approximately 2 inches apart. Space rows about 10–12 inches apart.

Choose a location receiving at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Keep the soil consistently moist during germination but not waterlogged.

Seeds typically germinate within approximately 3–10 days.

Loose, stone-free soil helps produce smooth, straight roots. Mix compost or aged organic matter into the soil before planting.

French Breakfast Radishes grow well in raised beds and containers at least 6–8 inches deep.

For a continuous harvest, sow a small amount of seed every 7–14 days during cool weather.

How to Care for French Breakfast Radish Plants

Water regularly so the soil remains evenly moist. Irregular watering can cause roots to become tough, woody, or overly spicy.

Apply a light layer of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer, which may encourage leafy growth instead of root development.

Monitor for common pests such as flea beetles, aphids, and root maggots. Good spacing, crop rotation, and clean garden conditions help reduce pest and disease problems.

French Breakfast Radishes generally mature approximately 25–30 days after sowing.

Harvest when the roots are about 3–4 inches long and approximately ¾–1 inch wide, with bright red shoulders and clean white tips.

Do not leave mature roots in the soil too long, especially during warm weather, as they may become pithy or excessively strong in flavor.

Remove the leafy tops after harvest and store the roots in the refrigerator. For the best flavor and crisp texture, use them within approximately 1–2 weeks.
