How to Grow Organic Catnip Seeds (Nepeta cataria):
Catnip is a hardy, easy perennial herb that sprouts best with a little patience because seeds can be slow. You can start indoors 6–8 weeks before last frost or direct sow outdoors after frost; in warm climates, sow during the cooler season. Seeds are tiny, so sow on the surface or barely cover with a thin layer of soil (about 2–3 mm / ⅛ in) and gently press in. Keep soil lightly moist until germination, which usually takes 7–21 days. Give bright light and mild warmth for faster sprouting. Transplant or thin seedlings to about 30–45 cm (12–18 in) apart. Plant in full sun for the strongest growth, though light shade is fine in hot areas. Catnip isn’t picky about soil but prefers well-drained ground.

How to Care for Organic Catnip:
Water regularly while plants establish, then water only when the topsoil dries—catnip is drought tolerant once rooted and hates soggy soil. Fertilizer is minimal; too much nitrogen makes it floppy and less aromatic, so compost at planting or a light feed in spring is enough. For bushier plants, pinch the tips when young and trim back after the first flowering to encourage fresh leafy growth. Catnip can spread by seed, so deadhead flowers if you want to keep it contained, or leave some blooms if you want it to self-seed. Pests are usually rare; the main “problem” is cats rolling in it—use a small cage or plant extras if you expect heavy feline traffic. Harvest leaves anytime once the plant is well established; for the strongest scent, cut stems just as flowering begins, then dry them in shade with good airflow. In winter, cut back dead stems and it will regrow vigorously in spring.
