Wampee Fruit Tree Live Plant – Sweet Tropical Wampi (Clausena lansium) for Home Garden grows into an attractive evergreen fruit tree with glossy green foliage, fragrant white flowers, and clusters of small golden-yellow fruits. The fruits are about 1 inch across and grow in grape-like bunches, with juicy flesh that can range from pleasantly sweet to sweet-tart depending on the variety. Wampee fruit can be enjoyed fresh and is also excellent for juices, jams, jellies, desserts, and other tropical recipes. The crushed leaves have a distinctive anise-like fragrance, adding extra ornamental interest to the tree.

Wampee is related to citrus and typically develops into a small to medium-sized tree. In warm climates, it may reach around 15–20 feet or more in cultivation, while regular pruning can keep it smaller and easier to harvest.

Planting Season

Best planted in: Spring to Early Summer

Plant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. Wampee prefers a subtropical to tropical climate and performs best in warm, protected locations.

Established trees can tolerate brief light frost around 28°F (-2°C), but stronger freezes may cause serious damage or kill the tree. In colder regions, grow the plant in a large container and move it to a protected frost-free location during winter.

How to Plant Wampee Fruit Tree Live Plant

Choose a location receiving full sun for the strongest growth and best fruit production. Some partial shade is tolerated, but heavier shade may reduce fruiting.

Plant in fertile, well-drained soil. Wampee adapts to several soil types as long as drainage is good and the roots are not left in standing water.

Dig a hole approximately twice as wide as the root ball and about the same depth.

Carefully remove the plant from its container and position it so the top of the root ball remains level with the surrounding soil.

Backfill gently and water thoroughly after planting.

Apply mulch around the root zone to conserve moisture while keeping mulch several inches away from the trunk.

If planting multiple trees, allow approximately 10–20 feet between plants depending on how large you plan to let them grow.

Container growing is possible while the tree is young. Use a large pot with excellent drainage and increase container size as the root system develops.

How to Care for Wampee Fruit Trees

Water regularly during establishment, flowering, and fruit development. Keep the soil moderately moist but avoid prolonged waterlogging.

Once established, Wampee becomes fairly drought tolerant, although consistent moisture generally supports better growth and fruit production.

Feed during spring and summer with a balanced fruit-tree or citrus-type fertilizer.

Prune lightly to remove weak, damaged, or overcrowded branches and maintain an open canopy. Avoid excessive pruning because flowers and fruits develop toward the ends of branches.

Wampee typically produces small, fragrant white flowers followed by clusters of yellow to pale-orange fruits. In South Florida, fruit harvest commonly occurs from approximately June through August.

Harvest when the fruits develop their mature golden-yellow color and become juicy and flavorful. Fruits can be eaten fresh directly from the clusters or used for juices, jams, jellies, and desserts.

With warm temperatures, full sun, good drainage, and regular care, Wampee can become a productive and unusual tropical fruit tree for the home garden.
